What's New:

Our New Library Webpage

July 21, 2011

This is a culmination of a lot of work! As the webmaster, it is my hope that you enjoy it. As with every new endeavor, I'm sure there are some mistakes.  Please let me know of any that you find (pat.gann@sccboe.org)!

This webpage doesn't have the photos entered yet. I didn't realize how remiss I had gotten in not having photos taken of the library or computer lab in the last few years.  I've been so busy with the students, I haven't gotten pictures of all the work they've accomplished.  Hopefully, this will improve and photos of their work can be added over the next few Ms. Gann's pictureyears.

One of the projects I would like to add someday soon is a virtual tour of our library.  Now that we are working on videos, maybe that can be a project that will be finished someday soon.

The library depends on you, the parents and community of Moody!  You have been, and always will be the inspiration for our students.  Therefore, when we have our two sales of the year we ask you to participate if possible.

Donating old print cartridges help us a lot. They bring in extra money for us to purchase ink cartridges for our laser printers.  We have never charged students to print their papers or to use the printers for research purposes and we are hoping not to have to start that practice.  Most schools have had to resort to that in this tough economy as printer cartridges increase in price. Our cartridge costs are $250.00 ea. for one printer and up to $400.00 for the other printer in the library.  One library sale last year barely made enough to pay for the cartridges for half the year. As you can see, this is a big expense for the library and this does not even include the printer cost for the computer lab which is supported by the library as well.

Thanks for any help you can give with your time again this year.  The students and faculty of MJHS appreciate all you do!

In today’s world, the Internet is used as an information highway that helps students, teachers, and administration to get up-to-the-minute news, information sources outside the boundaries of the school walls, and a method of communicating with other students and schools world wide.

The AVL allows access to various encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and other reference materials as well as the actual books that are located in the library. Together, the books, the Internet, and the Virtual Library allow students to expand their horizons and opportunities to learn about the world in which they live.

As this year begins in the library, new and old ideas are already being contemplated and hopefully can be implemented this year.  Here are some ideas that hopefully can be completed this year:

  • Debates after researching information-filmed
  • Video-making
  • Cartoons made from a written story
  • Poetry books
  • Jeopardy Game on Library Skills
  • Lessons in Microsoft Publisher, Word and Excel

If all of these  projects get completed this year successfully, it will be a very worthwhile year and the students should learn a lot!  Wish the teachers, the library staff, and the computer technical crew luck for the best year ever!

Donations and their Importance

Advanced Features on the Site:

There have been five large boxes of books donated to Moody Jr. High School. We are always looking for donations!  Donations of books are especially important in these times when money is not available for new books.  Please remember to help the library with your donations of used printer cartridges and Campbell's labels as well.  Paper for printing and ink for our laser printers is very expensive and these donations help us with these important necessities.

Important Webpage Resources

Here are some important pages to check out:

Web Resources: Links to all kinds of subjects to help students with information for reports.

Alabama Virtual Library: This is a group of online databases that have magazine, journal, and newspaper articles for research. This includes a complete set of encyclopedias so that you don't have to purchase a set yourself.  It is listed under the "Research Tools" tab.

Alabama Homework Online: Don't get behind in work that is not understood!  Having trouble in math?  Go to the "Homework Online Helpline"! found under the "Students" tab.

Other Libraries:  Take advantage of the other libraries around the area. The Moody Public Library (Doris Stanley Memorial Library) has computers online to help you type and research reports if you do not have a computer available at home.

Also, if you live or work in Jefferson County, the entire United States including all libraries in Alabama and the Jefferson County area are free to you through the Leeds Public Library with just getting a library card. You will need proof of residence or work location.  If you live in St. Clair County, the fee is $50.00 per year to join, but can be well worth the fee if you like to read.  Books, videos, and any other materials are available and can be ordered and shipped to the Leeds Public Library.  These materials take only about two days to reach the Leeds Library unless they are already checked out to other patrons.  Obviously, if they are not in the Jefferson County System, the wait time is longer.

Library Catalog: Students may make a list of books they would like to read from their own computers at home and then put them on reserve from their home computers.  Although students are allowed to reserve only one book at a time, the list is there for them to refer to so they can add a book as soon as they pick up their reserve from the library.  That way, a books is always on reserve for them and they will always get the books they want quickly.

Google site search: Type in a keyword and this will find anything located in this Library site.
