3.)After making 3" x 5" index cards of famous women from
a bibliography of library books located in the school and/or
local public library, students will draw the name of a famous
woman from the deck of cards. Students will then use library
books and three sources from the Alabama Virtual Library to
find their information. ( Biographies of Notable Women
[http://library.moodyjrhigh.com/new_page_28i.htm])
5.)What information do the students need to find for
their newsletters? A. Lifetime Information (Childhood and
Adult information (Birth and Death Dates) B. Education
Information C. Important Events in their Lives (Why are they
famous?) D. Find a picture of their invention, a poem if they
are a poet, or some story that makes their life interesting.
E. Find at least one picture of your person. (A handout will
be given with specific instructions on this.) ( Biographies of Notable Women
[http://library.moodyjrhigh.com/new_page_28i.htm])
6.)How to use the Gale Online Virtual Library. Students
will learn that Gale has citation information for both MLA and
APA for their research papers. A discussion of what citation
information is takes place at this time and why it is
important in research papers. Plagarism is also discussed at
this time. ( Alabama Virtual Library
[http://library.moodyjrhigh.com/new_page_28m.htm])
7.)How to use the Biography Reference Bank. Students are
shown that this is great for looking up information on people
and has the most current information about famous people.
Special consideration is shown to the dates articles are
written. Gale has a section where "More images..." are listed.
This is where discussion occurs on where it is important to
expand the image to its largest size before saving it to their
file. Images can be downsized easier than enlargened. ( Alabama Virtual Library Lessons Continue
[http://library.moodyjrhigh.com/new_page_28n.htm])
8.)How to use the Britannica Online Academic
Encyclopedia. Both ways of looking up something up in
Britannica are examined - the browse method using the A-Z
method for students with spelling problems and the Advanced
method for students that know how to spell their famous
women's names correctly. An examination of how Britannica is
divided into sections is shown so that students do not have to
read the entire article to get their information is
shown. ( Alabama Virtual Library Lessons Continue
[http://library.moodyjrhigh.com/new_page_28n.htm])
9.)The Alabama Virtual Library website itself is visited.
Other specific sites are shown that might be good for later
research projects or that might be of interest to their
parents. It is mentioned that parents can get their AVL cards
at any public library and that their cards are good for at
least five years. ( Alabama Virtual Library
[http://www.avl.lib.al.us/])
10.)10. After looking at the actual AVL website, it's
time to start the newsletter.
